West Ky Youth Camp

July 6, 2009

I was five years old the first time I stayed at WKYC. My father was director that week and my mother was a counselor. I can barely remember being there but do remember having to leave early because I got sick.

It was the summer after I turned eight when I returned as a full-fledged camper and attended every year until somewhere around my early teen years. When I was 17 or 18 I joined the staff as a teacher one summer and a few years ago became a counselor during the Pee-Wee weekend when our youngest became old enough to attend.

During those years, our four older children became campers and our three boys still enjoy Teen Week each year. Our oldest gave his life to Christ at WKYC. It has been and will continue to be a very special place to our family.

Last week I was a counselor at the 11-13 week and had a wonderful time. Our youngest (who is now eight) accompanied me. We had eleven girls in the cabin, beautiful weather, and watched as three precious souls gave their lives to Christ. My eleven girls begged me each night to turn the lights out early. We were probably the only cabin in bed and asleep by midnight each night. (I’m not complaining :).

Camp started on Sunday afternoon and lasted until Friday. There were many memorable moments and fun times. I can’t begin to write all the funny things the kids said and did but one memorable talk will be the topic of a soon to be released Forthright article.

Check out the WKYC website and consider sending a young person you love to church camp.

I highly recommend it!
